Everybody knows that saying “I’ve died and gone to heaven”, and this applies to most enthusiasts in this junkyard full of old decrepit Ford Mustangs. Especially, the project guy that has an old classic sitting in the garage. I’m sure it could go either way, though, as some might consider this a sore sight with so many wrecked and rusted ponies. This is the Colorado Mustang Salvage Yard.

Colorado Mustang Specialists, Inc. began in a two-car garage in 1972. Mustangs were as numerous as hippies on a Boulder park lawn, easy to buy, fix and sell. So, a would be University of Colorado student found a lucrative way to pay his rent and tuition. After graduation the diploma went in a drawer and the horsing around got serious. Wrecked, junked and abandoned Mustangs were cheap and plentiful, so the collection started that eventually led to the worlds largest Mustang salvage yard.

Most recent and exciting to us is the addition of modern fuel injection conversions, for 64-1/2 to 85 models. These conversions and related parts let the novice enthusiast bring his early Mustang into the new millennium with a computer driven, fuel-injected, V-8 power train, meeting todays standards without changing the Mustangs classic design. We predict these conversions will open a fun and exciting new era of Mustang enthusiasm.

New for 2003 Fords Model T-100!

All new for 2003...almost.

Yes that’s correct for the 100th year of production Ford build a total of 6 Model T-100 to commemorate the year.

These weren’t restored cars, they were all new parts.  The bodies were made in Sweden, coupled with available aftermarket.  The engine, suspension parts, transmissions were created from the original drawings.

The T's transmission - could replace the original unit, however the gear pattern is not the same so the internal will not match up.

C6 07 Corvette – Fuel Gauge/Low Fuel/Service Fuel System

I haven’t done much writing about my C6 Corvette, mainly because it has really been a great car (still is) even with the technology glitches.

 

However, as you might have gathered from the title there is an issue that I thought I’d jot down along with some possible causes and some preventive measures.

I recently had the problem with my gas gauge flopping round and kicking off the low fuel warning.  Interesting enough it only happened immediately after filling up.  It is an immediate reaction when I turn the car on.  During this most recent incident the gauge remained flat-lined for what seemed a bit longer then it has in the past. I’m talking 20 miles or more with 3 stops full and shut down.  It was accompanied by the engine light, which remained on after the gauge went back to normal and the low fuel warning stopped.

The Vette ran perfectly  during the event so I’m not too worried , but still you don’t want to have to call the flatbed.

So I dropped a note on my corvette clubs site ACE (Arizona Corvette Enthusiasts) http://www.arizonacorvetteenthusiasts.net and to see what they thought.

Most swear by Chevron gas with its Techron cleaning agent and some were thinking it might be a sending unit and some said it is a common problem with C5 ( the previous generation of Corvettes).

Here are some comments:
—“Use some Seafoam (Autozone, Checker etc.) per directions on the bottle.  Techron works also.”  My NOTE:  Seafoam is tough stuff, you have to be sure to change your fuel filter shortly there after.

—“Same thing would happen to me with Roxxane II (c5).  It would show empty when I filled her up. I would use 2 bottles of Techron and then one bottle at every fill up for the next 4 tanks.   Problem went away for a while. Then I would use one bottle every 2 tanks and that kept the demon away.”

This one was exteremly helpful……”Well, stop putting gas in it, maybe the problem goes away.”

—“It’s a level sender issue for sure.  If Techron doesn’t solve it, you’ll either have to learn to live with it, or replace the faulty sensor.  Do you have any way to check the codes to see which sensor is unhappy?”  ( I don’t so if it acts up again, I’ll have to take it in.)

—“Two possibilities…. sulphur build up on the sending unit or the sending unit going out.  I understand they are a biotch to change.”

—“My C5 had the problem unless I ran Chevron gas in it.  About the second tank of non Chevron the gauge would go crazy.  I would switch back and the problem went away.”

—“This was a common occurrence on the ‘early’ C5’s. It usually happened when high sulphur content fuel was put in. Some of the fixes were switching gas to adding a bottle of Techron every once in a while.  The real ‘fix’ was a reflash at the dealer.   Apparently the sender was a bit too sensitive, so they slowed it down.

I had the issue occasionally on my 99, but when I put a 2002 Z06 operating system into the computer, it went away.

Since you have a C6, I would expect that the issue isn’t a reflash. My guess would be that maybe you got some high sulphur content fuel or your sender is acting up in some way,     maybe a poor or intermittent connection somewhere along the line.

—“You could try a treatment with Techron and see if that ‘cleans’ it up. ”

—“I was using the Techron trick in my C5. I switched to Gumout Regane Fuel System Cleaner. I t seems to help, although my gauge still jumps to E at times when below 1/3 of a tank. Good luck. It sucks to not really know how much fuel is in your tank. Although a Vette is light in comparison to other cars, I just can’t see myself pushing it into the gas station.”

So there you have a round of discussion on the topic.

 

Now the fuel leveling sensor is used because the C6 had two tanks and this keeps the tanks level.  Which is important especially if you are running auto cross.  Here is area a couple of graphics from http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com:

 

 

 

So you can see that it would a chore to replace.  So I’m going to try the Techron and hope  it works.  I’ve been cautioned that I need the  Fuel System Cleaner – not the injector cleaner.  Here’s a pic:

I’ve used my first 12 oz can and I’m currently at half a tank.  I’ll fill it up again in a couple of days (Yes..when you normally drive it like you just stole it you tend to have to fill up – now and again..mostly..again!) and I’ll try to capture the event on my trusty Android.

Cars You Never Heard Of! Part 2

Thanks for all the comments and emails on the Part 1 of the Cars You Never Heard Of.

Thought I’d follow it up with the Panther Kallista.   This stems from the same article  in  “Classic and Sport Car” a UK publication.  The article pitted  pricey European cars against less expensive cars and rated them.  It’s over all theme was “See you can get this close to the expensive cars, for less.”

 

1985 Panther Kallista

Kallista was the product of the Panther Car Company and they were built between 1980 and 1990, actually coming on the market in about 1982.  The were a box chassis with an aluminum body.  The engine that was first used was Fords 2.8 V6 which cranked out 2792 cc from its 12v configuration.  The electronic fuel injection helped it deliver 150 hp and 159 lb ft of torque. Top speed was about 120 mph with the help of the 5 speed manual transmission.

It had an independent wishbone suspension, rigid axle, rack and pinion steering with disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear.

In the article Kallista was compared against the Morgan Plus 8 which you can purchase now days for about 35,000 British Pounds (about $70k US) compared to the collectors price of 7,000 BP ($14k US).  In that contest comparing Driving, Practicality, Character, Value and Usability the Morgan was judged with a total of 37 points and the Panther Kallista end up with 35.

I did find one on Ebay with a few days still to go with a current bid of just over $4k.  It’s an 1986, 4 cylinder – not a V6.

Cars You Never Heard Of! Part 1

Of course I spend a lot of time reading and again a lot of that is two or three-dimensional, although my wife says it’s a single dimension.  She sees just “CARS”  I see muscle cars, sedans (that I want to turn in to muscle cars), exotic cars and even some European cars.  That’s multi-dimensional, don’t you think?  I gained a little interest in them when I was a kid and my Dad surprised my Mother with a 60’ish MGB – mainly I learned that unless you wanted to fix ’em a lot…stay a way!!!

I gained a little more familiarization with another brand when I was in college.   I had my license suspended….you can figure out why…so don’t make me say ‘too many speeding tickets”, ok?  Thanks.  So it was only about a mile or so walk to the campus from where I stayed, but if you are from one of the colder States, like northern New York, then you’d know that a morning jaunt on  a Dec. morning is ‘nippy” to say the least.  So I would catch a ride with a friend.  He drove the one of the coolest cars I had ridden.  It was a Citroen. Similar to this one:

It had the coolest suspension that would raise when you started it and lower when you turned it off.

My point being that there is another dimension to my reading – European cars.  But I am in no way any kind of expert with any of them – although when I lived in Germany, I drove a very old European Ford Escort.  That car was horrible!!!! However, it got me round, even when the upper part of the seat frame broke and the only way to drive it was by holding yourself forward using the steering wheel else the seat back, because it leaned so much, should dump you in the back seat.  Last  year I signed up for..please kneel…”HEMMINGS”… thank you….you may relax now… SPORTS & EXOTIC CAR magazine – some great articles and I enjoy Mike’s and Richard’s writings. Geezze, this is a long way around to the point that I picked up a copy of Classic & Sports Car magazine – UK produced – the other day.

In this was a series of articles that pitted 4 pair of cars against each other.  One car in each pair was an expensive classic brand/model and the other was relatively inexpensive newer brand/model.  Two things dawned on me, one was,”Hey, I’ve never heard of a Reliant Scimitar SS1 or a Panther Kallista.”   The  second thing was, “Hey, have never heard of any of these cars!”   Normally if  I have just one of these realizations – I won’t read the article… nope not interested…. but this time I did.

And now I need to know a little about these cars and I know you do to….all three of my readers!!!  So we’ll take a look at  the Panther Kallista and the  Caterham Seven and the TVR S3 and the Reliant Scimitar SS1.

First up is the Reliant Scimitar SS1.

This car (at about 3000 British Pounds  – $6000 USD) was being compared to the Lotus Elan (at 16000 British Pounds or about $32,000 USD).  Here is what it looks like:

These cars were made from 1986 to 1990, however the Scimitar  actually arrived on the scene in 1964 with a Ford straight 6 cylinder as the power plant.  These more recent models  had a spaceframe chassis and fiberglass body, an iron block, alloy heads, SOHC 1809 cc, 8 valve 4.  It also sported a Garrett T2 Turbo with electronic multi-port fuel injection system.  This allowed it to  lay out 140 HP and 141 lb ft of torque and reach a top speed of 128 mph and it only weighted 1969 lbs.

They sported a 5 speed manual transmission, rack and pinion steering, double wishbone independent suspension and disks breaks.

Just to give you some closure, it was compared to the Lotus Elan where it scored 2 points less than the Lotus (38 to 40) in Driving, Practicality, Character, Value and Usability.

When New Technology Meets Old Cars

When you work with and/or drive classic cars there is a never ending battle between old school and technology. Do I leave the points and condenser in or do I go all electronic? Do I update the suspension with coil-overs or go with stock suspension? Upgrade the interior to cloth or go with the vinyl? Many of us face those battles all the time. But there’s one clash between old and new that we just can’t to anything about and that is when new non-car technology clashes with old cars.

Back in ancient times the man went out to gather or kill something to bring home for dinner. That hasn’t changed much, especially in my household. Every week I strike out into the jungle to visit the local gatherers’ spot and cart home something for dinner. The only killing going on is my checking account balance.

Today was the day for our weekly shopping, so I fired up the ’70 Stang and headed out, ready for the hunt. After I was done scouting for “sales” and had enough provisions to last seven moons, the clerk (oh, they don’t call them that anymore…’associate’ is the correct term) took my hard earned provisions(HEY!!!..its tough shopping at the mega grocery – carts speeding around like herds of prehistoric lizards, tar pits of jelly on the floor, ill tempered rival tribes in the gourmet isle…yeah…it’s tough!!), stuffed them in to about 20 plastic bags and dumped it all into a cart. On the way out of the store a couple of clerks….excuse me…associates…said have a ‘nice day’ and ‘thank you’, as I tried to push the squared wheeled cart to the parking lot and my car.

 

As I popped open the trunk on the Mustang, I remembered the floor of this cavernous opening is covered with the new vinyl (original material) I installed a few months back and nothing else (I don’t carry a spare for drag strip purposes and it wouldn’t work with the tire size anyway). I looked at the contents of the squared wheeled cart and realized that by the time I got home, my gatherings will be all over the place, even if I didn’t drive like I normally do. If I tied them shut, the bags are still going slide everywhere, including into the quarter panel wells, creating a dripping plastic bag full of wine that just moments ago were grapes.

My next option was putting the bags inside, on the vinyl bench seat in the rear and the on front bucket set. Still the vinyl was going to let everything slide side to side and drop down on the floor.

 

Then I remembered back to when I shopped with my mother as a kid and the vinyl seats in our old Chevy Biscayne. The saving grace there were the old school paper bags that stood up straight and were packed heavy to stay in place. Their square shape allowed for the use of effective load master techniques that kept them on the seat or upright in the trunk. Then I thought,”I should have gone with the cloth over the vinyl.”

Lemons, Lemonade, Life and Project Cars

No this isn’t a about purchasing a junker car.

This is just an update.

I’ve been preoccupied the last few days I haven’t kept up with my articles.  Since this is the Average Guy’s..etc., then you’ll get this next part.

Thing’s happen in life (a.k.a. – Lemons) and you just have to deal with them.  The goal is always make the best of the circumstances (a.k.a. – Lemonade).

Earlier this week I lost my job with the company I worked in for the past six years. This is not  uncommon in these economic times and there are many average car guys and car gals in the same boat.   Many of those people have project cars and these end up being put on the back burner or sadly end up being sold. As car people we all know this happens and hopefully the car goes to good home.  Hold on before anyone drags out their savings and offers to purchase my Mustang – I’m not there yet.  But it will put my major plans for it on hold for a bit, which is a darn shame, because now I seem to have extra time on my hands to accomplish all those mod, not true a week ago.

So for the better part of the past week I’ve been setting up my job hunting network and getting it in motion.  Now it time to wait it out and see what pops up.  In the meantime I’ll have more time for writing and doing the little left over projects on the Mustang.  I still have the passenger’s seat to re-upholster and the front air dam to put on (I’ve had that in the box for years).  I can install  the polished aluminum alternator bracket I worked so hard on and have yet to install.

And……. I am project managing the restoration of a 1975 Standard VW beetle – pro bono. Here she is:

So unless you are Jay Leno (I hate that guy!!! – not really,  I’m just jealous – I want him to hire me to keep his cars driven and shiny and search out more cars for him..hey..there’s an idea!!!! “Dear Mr. Leno, I’m a car guy and I currently find myself with some  free time so I’m applying for…..”)   you dealt with circumstances like job loss or lack of funds to finish or keep that project collector car.  But remember you can take it slow on projects – it’s OK to slow down and if you have to give up that beautiful machine, keep the memories and there is always tomorrow and another car in your future  –  you have to believe that and work toward it.

Car Production Numbers. They Made How Many? 1934

Jump back to 1934 and lets see what the auto makers cold crank out.

Ford was the leader over Chevy but only by 12k cars, 563,921 and 551,191 respectively.

Plymouth was third with 321,171.

Dodge was a distant fourth with 95,011

Hudson/Terraplane produced 85,935

Oldsmobile only 79,814

Pontiac just slightly behind them with 78,859

Buick finished up last with 71,009

What else was going on in 1934:

–  Hudson dropped its six banger

Lincoln put V12’s in all of their cars.  The 414 cid carried a 6.3:1 compression.

– Graham produced the supercharged Custom Eight.

Car Production Numbers. They Made How Many? 1950

Folks seem to like this segment so let’s continue with 1950.

19 major car makers existed back then and Chevy topped the production totals with 1,498,590 units followed closely by Ford with 1, 208,912.  The rest of the field were all less than have that.

Dodge – 341,797

Studebaker – 320,884  (Don’t ya wish they would have made it?  I would love to have seen their innovation continue.)

Of note:

This was the last year for the Old 6 cylinder 76 models, while their Rocket  88 set speed records at Daytona – averaging 100.28 mph.
