Garage Sale Find – 1950’s Chevy

You just never know what you are going to find at a garage sale.

I was running some errands this pass weekend that included a trip to my local Ace Hardware store.  As I entered the parking lot of the hardware store,  I noticed a “garage sale” sign outside the local self-storage located across the street.

I don’t often attend garage sales unless I know ahead of time what I need might be there and that I can pick it up cheap.  However, it was beautiful Southern Arizona morning so I walked across the street and wandered around the storage buildings.   It was a good size storage lot a bit more like a swap-meet, with some guy cooking burgers on his small home grill and selling bottled water.  Not much interested me and I was about to exist, when I saw notices some car parts in the far corner.  No self-respecting car gal/guy wouldn’t pass up at least a quick glance at old car parts.

There was no one around and no prices, so maybe it wasn’t part of the garage sale.  Looks to be a 1955 Chevy front clip.

It had some re-bar temp braces on the back side to keep it from betting out of alignment.

Never know what you are going to find.

Auto Factoids for the Week of Jan 18, 2014

Well we just returned from a weekend trip to Las Vegas celebrating my beautiful wife’s birthday. Of course since you see this post, you can surmise that we didn’t come back big winners, but I did bring home more money than what I started with and we had a great time.  However,  I was disappointed, I hadn’t been to the “strip” for a number of years and I was expecting to see some fantastic cars zipping around. High roller – flashing their Lambo’s and Farraris or even a Lotus or a classic.  Nope – not a one, unless you count the Ferrari that sat at the resort the entire time.  Very disappointed.

So back at the old keyboard and here are your auto factoids for the week.

Jan 20, 1942 – Chevy sends it last car off the assembly line until WWII concludes.  The bulk of the last cars produced were, for the time,  the very undesirable “black out” models – where chrome wasn’t used and the cars seemed muted.  But a true black out model is highly sought after in today’s market.

It’s a gas-turbine engine powered bus.  First displayed in NY on this date. This is a GM application the are others, including a “firebird” and some Chrysler projects.

Jan 24, 1960 – Volvo shows the world the P1800 Prototype.  The engine was the Swedish  B18 and it displaced 1800 cc. Topped with dual SU carbs it produced 100 hp.  The try was dubbed the P1900 but only double digit(under 100) number of cars were sold.  The engine was Swedish but the car was being manufactured by Jensen.  Jensen had quality control problems with the P1800 and by 1963 Vovlo took the car home to it’s Gothenburg and named it the 1800S (for Sweden).

LS-based engines have earned notoriety for power and performance while becoming one of the most popular choices for both drag racing and street-engine swaps. They have been strong, reliable engines in most applications, but then racers and engine builders soon began leaning on them with longer strokes, higher rpm demands, stronger boost levels in addition to other traditional paths to power.Unfortunately, these power quests sometimes revealed problems which ultimately prompted various upgrades and a few elegant solutions from the aftermarket. Such is the case with the Dart LS Next advanced cylinder block, a design refinement targeting some questionable design elements of the factory LS platform. The new block boasts hardcore racing features designed to upgrade oiling and crankcase breathing functions.

Slacking 101 – What’s coming up?

So I’ve been slacking since getting back from our Italy trip. Ok…that’s not exactly true.  Some slacking has taken place, however some time has been spent recovering from reconstructive surgery on my right shoulder – yes my shifting side!!!!!   They called it bicep tendon relocation, which is severing the upper connection of the tendon and relocating somewhere in the joint. See the actual surgical pic below….no…I’m kidding…no pic…seriously, ain’t nobody got time for that!!!

It’s been about three weeks and I’ve started physical therapy…or as I call it “pay as you go torture”.  Slowly coming back and I at least, with the proper adjustments do the driver’s seat, I can lay my arm on the console and shift the Vette – thank the Car Gods for short throw!!!!!

This also means with a bit of adjustment to the driver’s seat…Smile typing with both hands is now possible.

So coming up will be a gratuitous post on my new line of services that include auto restoration project management and certified auto appraisals.  I plan on continuing the Lost Classic Truck series and I have a few more engine pieces to do as well.

You’ll also see a piece I’m writing on a drag strip and some interesting figures on racing teams and as promised, some details on the cars and driving in Italy.
