Auto Factoids for the Week of April 23, 2017

April 25, 1970 – First Mazda in the US

I remember seeing the first Mazda cars in the U.S. I was 12 or 13 and I recall thinking – Why?   We still had the big 60’s cars and really didn’t see a need for the small cars.  The first rounds fo the Japanese imports were well thought of, perhaps unfairly and reliability was an issue.  But the Mazda has come a long way.  I remember back in 1989-90 when the  Mazda Miata (MX-5).  It was a “girls” car (so I thought…don’t judgement) and dealerships were charging quite a bit over invoice and getting that price, at least out in California.  But have things changed.  See the times they put down in SCCA events and even at my local SCCA chapter where I run my Corvette, I don’t think less of this generation of Mazda.

The car had some ‘socialization’ issues and it took a few years to get a good network of dealerships in the U.S.  However, by the mid 1970’s Mazda’s were emission compliant and figured out how to get 90 hp out of just 70 cubic inches.

April 28, 1916 – Ferruccio Lamborghini born in Renazzo di Cento, Italy.

Ferruccio Lamborghini

Renazzo isn’t far from Modena, Italy, which is ‘Mecca’ for Italian cars.  Ferruccio’s family were grape farmers and didn’t just jump in to designing cars, but started out in the tractor business Lamorghini Trattori.   Then he started an oil heater factory that turned into an air conditioning factory.  In fact he didn’t start Automobili Lamborghini until 1963.  It’s a shame those car never caught on!!

Note:  It takes me a couple of days to put these together – not working straight though, mind you – as I was getting ready to finish this up I ran across an article May 2017 edition of Hemmings Motor News (my personal favorite automotive magazine publisher) on the 1959 Lamborghini DAL 35 Super Tractor.   The company is now part of SDF and they also sell other band name tractors like SAME, Dutz-Fahr and a couple of others.  According the Hemmings article they use the Lamborghini Bull logo.

April 28, 1953 – Kaiser-Frazer buys Willys.

Kaiser-Frazer car production was a mixed bag in the 1950’s.  Some typical 50’s cars were produced and some exciting like the Henry J and the Kaiser Roadster of 1954 and the Kaiser Darrin. The Frazer name had faded away by then and Kaiser purchased Willys for $63,381,175 and formed the Kaiser Willys Corporation.  They exited the passenger car market to focus on utility vehicles, including the Areo-Willys.  Kaiser took their business overseas to Argentina,  Israel, Netherlands and continued make utility vehicles until 1962.  By 1963 the company was called the Kaiser Jeep Corporation and was sold to American Motors in 1970.

April 29, 1959 – Ford builds 50,000,000 car.

That car was a 1959 Ford Galaxie that came out of the Dearborn factory.  It was a white 4 door sedan with the 292, engine.  It was actually a Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie and the first time Galaxie was used on a Ford car.  Fast forward – but not too far – and the Fairlanes, Fairlanes 500, and the Galaxies were to become monster muscle machines in the mid to late 60’s!!!

Project SportsRoof – 73 Mustang – Getting in Gear with the Transmission Part 2

Welcome back to #ProjectSportsRoof.  I’m finishing the re-positioned shifting rod above the transmission’s cross member.

Next I’ll need to go top side and give the selector a try.  If that is working properly, hitting the proper gears I can spin the torque converter and properly torque its connection to the flex plate.

More coming up.

1970 Mustang Front End – What should I do?

My Nephew’s 1970 Stang needs some attention.

I get to park in my office!

Well it’s been a long week getting her back on the road. But she drove well enough given her condition.

I am looking for opinions on kits for front suspension rebuilds, mine is shot. At this point I’m probably looking for the cheapest most comprehensive kit given my pony’s condition.

My entire front suspension is not suspending, or bouncing, or quiet. Its time for a full rebuild but I’ve been waiting to blow my motor to justify a full car build! It’s been on its last leg for at least 10 years so at this point I’m trying to see how far I can go to prove Ford’s reliability before tearing her down and she just won’t die! A true survivor.

Also I have a mean top end tick I have lots of play in my lifters, I’m assuming that’s the problem. Already replaced the valve caps, but I probably lost one or two again, any tips or tricks to adjust these ticks?

Although she really like cruising at 50 mph everywhere! I had a hard time keeping it under that speed.

Josh,

You will get a lot of opinions and have a lot of options.  Basically is comes down to what you want the car to be.  If you just want a cruiser I think you can’t go wrong with just building like it came from the factory.  I did that with my 1970 only difference is I use polyurethane bushing.   Polyurethane bushing improved the ride without ruining the feel of how the car would have handled when it came from the factory.  Properly greased the don’t squeak.   If you want it a bit better ride you can upgrade components as you go.

I recommend the RPS kit (it is under $300)

Welcome back to #ProjectSportsRoof.  I’m moving ever closer to getting her back on the road.  Popped the distributor in recently.  Take a quick look.

1973 Mustang – Project SportsRoof – Engine Bay Components.

I thought I’d take a minute and catch the readers up on #ProjectSportsRoof.

I wanted to touch up some of the engine bay components, horns, vacuum canister and battery tray.  I didn’t want to alter some of these too much, I like having the numbers, logos and other info visible, not covered under a several layers of primer and paint.  So these items were lightly sanded and then sprayed with primer and black engine paint.

Battery Tray – in the process of being sanded with dremel.

The horns were cleaned up with break cleaner then sanded by hand.

A lot of the paint just came off with the cleaning.

Horn in the process of being sanded.. Note the “LO” and other numbers. My goal is to keep them visible.

A coat of  Eastwood Rust Encapsulator  and then a primer coated applied – tried to keep the numbers, etc. visible.

A little more sanding and then some paint.

Vacuum Canister

Battery Tray and Horns

I think they came out O.K.

There is a quick video.

Coming up distributor install and transmission update.

Pop-Up Car Show – T-Birds and Ranchero Fairlane 500

As with most car guys, I have an active eye for cool cars.  I could be walking down the street or driving anywhere and spot a cool car that needs it’s picture taken.

Last Sunday was one of those days.  Driving past a gas station that I drive by every day my “cool car spidey senses” kicked in and I had to stop.

The cars were there supporting the opening of a local hair and nail salon.  Now I’m not one for gets his nails done…but if they can keep cool car set up out side…I’m might might stop in for a perm!!   (If I start growing hair again!!!)

Take a look at the cars that showed up.

Love this line up!!! Reverse opening door on this coupe!!!

Love this rod!!!!

No bright work on this 40’s era car. Great lines for this coupe!

Check out the painted steel wheels…Love that look!

This T-Bird is in original condition.

Love that 390 Engine!

All original ’57 T-bird – 312 engine in awesome condition and it’s driven.

This was my favorite. (No not the SUV) It’s the ’69 Ford Ranchero Fairlane 500 (yes that’s a real thing!)

Love the stripes!!

Interior is as it was when it rolled out of the factory – radio delete, no A/C.

I have to say I loved the 69 Ranchero Fairlane 500.  It had the 351C engine.  I spoke with the owner who has several classic cars and really loves them, in particular, this Ranchero.   I understand why!!!

Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction – Scottsdale, AZ 2017 Videos 8-9

Welcome back to  our recent trip to Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction 2017 in Scottsdale, AZ.  Keep in mind these videos were part of the our Facebook Live event and I’m sharing them here on our blog.  Quality is ‘iffy’ in spots but if you’ve never been to some this huge it’s cool to see some of the areas that the TV coverage doesn’t always show.

This next video is more of the staging area and a look at a few of the cars coming up.  You’ll see the ’69 Road Runner that appeared in Hemming Muscle Machines publication, it is as nice in persons as it was on pages of the magazine.

This video is at the Hillbank display.  These are beautiful cars and the all aluminum bodies are awesome to see.  The Daytona coups are built on CSX 9000 chassis (the originals were built on CSX 2000 chassis).  They have the 427 Cobra engine and the 427 S/C. You can find out more at WWW.HILLBANKUSA.COM .

Thanks for reading. A few more videos coming that include an impromptu conversation with one of the sellers and one of the guys working to get the cars up on the stage.

Is My Car Rare? 1971-1973 Mustangs

It’s every muscle/antique/collector car owner’s dream that their car is “Rare”.  However, determining that your car is rare can be tough. So, there is nothing cooler then having the numbers/statics that help prove that your car is special.  Take such as the Marti Reports for Ford products.  They provide those numbers for the Ford collector.

If you aren’t familiar with the products Kevin Marti  can provide here is a link to my post where I the Marti Report for #ProjectSportsRoof – Classic Mustangs – #ProjectSportsRoof’s Marti Report .

There are other similar services for other brands like PHS (Pontiac Historic Services) which has similar documentation.  Whatever your favorite car maker – go check out forums that are related to that brand and ask around.   Now that I have a 1973 Mustang, I hang out at 7173Mustangs.com a wealth of knowledge exist here as well great looking cars and enthusiastic owners from all over the world.

The Marti Report #ProjectSportsRoof show that is is 1 of 76 with that paint and trim codes.  No doubt it is ‘rare’ if you boil the data down far enough and that’s great.  I as mentioned in the posting above that’s great to boast at the local car club hangout. But what does it mean for value?

Logically someone, who has been exposed to car values through the web or the online car auctions like Mecum and Barrett-Jackson, can equate rarity to value.  Just count the number of times the auctioneer says the word “rare”.  But really what equates to value is ‘desirability’ and rarity is a component of desirability.  There are a lot more Boss 302 Mustang produced in 1969 or 1970 then  76 in 1973, but the body style of my Sports Roof isn’t as desirable as the 1970 or 1969 Boss.  So during this Classic Car Auction season in Arizona,  keep that in mind when you are attending an event live or virtually.

But value isn’t everything….you have to enjoy your ride!!!
