Hot Rods Head to Beaulieu — WordPress.com

BEAULIEU’S ever popular Custom & Hot Rod Festival, held on Father’s Day, saw hundreds of colourful customs and stunning hot rods flood into the picturesque parkland of the National Motor Museum.

The Festival, held in association with Victory Wheelers, the south coast’s leading Custom, American and Hot Rod club, welcomed 7,320 visitors.

A large variety of custom cars and motorcycles were on display, with plenty of unusual designs and eye-catching artwork for visitors to admire. A number of trade stands were open for business, selling clothing, Americana memorabilia, merchandise and accessories.

This year, three dragsters formed a special display in a corner of the Beaulieu Arena. The Ratcatcher Resurrection slingshot dragster and Joe Bond’s Nuthin Fancy fuel-altered dragster both fired up for watching visitors, showing off the powerful force of their engines, in morning and afternoon demonstrations.

Europe’s first dragster, Sydney Allard’s 1961 Allard Chrysler, which was officially returned to the National Motor Museum at last year’s Festival, following extensive renovation, was also on display.

29th Annual Chevy Showdown – The Corvairs

There were many Corvair owners that braved the wind and brought their Monza’s, Drop Tops and Van’s to the 29th Annual Chevy Showdown today.

Here are some of the pictures.

Parking and setting up

Parking and setting up

I’d estimate about 20 Corvairs attended.  The white Monza was beautifully done!!  There were a couple unique Corvair powered entries.

In a previous post entitled  “Lost Classics – Trucks – Corvair Rampside” I mentioned that I’d never seen a Rampside in person.  Well, I can scratch that off my car bucket list.  Here is the 1961 Corvair powered Rampside.

This Corvair 95 Rampside is in very good condition and got to the show under it’s on power provided by the ‘Flat Six’.

Now the Rampside also came in the Greenbrier packaged.  And there was a Greenbrier Corvair there….this great looking 1962 van with the 110 engine.

Researchers look at boy-girl differences in autism

It has long been clear that autism strikes boys more often than girls. But when girls do get the condition, they tend to be at the severely affected end of the spectrum. Now, a group of geneticists thinks they’ve figured out why. Boys, it seems, can

Tucson Classics 7 Annual -BEST Car Show in Southern AZ – Highlights!!! Part 2

The thing about attending regional car shows in your region is there’ a very good chance that you are going to run some of the same cars, even in a show as big as this one.  Oh..don’t get me wrong I love looking at them but writing about the same cars is not very rewarding.  So I’m going to show you some of the cars I really enjoyed.

Of course I’m always drawn to the Vettes.

A Woodie K-ar

A Woodie K-ar

While it’s hard to discount the Chrysler K-cars’ historical significance (they did, more or less, save the company under Lee Iacocca’s leadership), most owners viewed them as disposable transportation, to be driven to the point of failure and then discarded. Recently, however, survivor K-cars have been turning up at auctions with surprising selling prices, such as the 1983 Chrysler Town & Country Mark Cross convertible that drew a winning bid of $13,750 (including the 10 percent buyer’s premium) at last weekend’s Auctions America sale in Auburn, Indiana.

Collectible K-Cars?   Of course!!!!  But did the K-Car really save Chrysler?

Curb Weight – Packard Wins – 09-02-13

Curb Weight is frequent blathering of car stuff – current and maybe some old stuff.  I hope you enjoy it.

If you are a car show buff and painful attention of fender/door gaps is what you are into then you’ll be glad to hear that  a Packard 1106 Twelve won the Pebble Beach Concours car show.

The 1934 Packard started life as a Taxi in Puerto Rico.  That is a long road to winning a Concours event.

I’ve visited the Bowling Green assembly plant a few times and it never grows old.  The last time I was there they were expanding the plant to include Chevy Volt production and (not releasable at that time) and this as well:

The new Corvette Stingray will be built at GM’s Bowling Green, Ky., assembly plant, which underwent a $131-million upgrade, including approximately $52 million for a new body shop to manufacture the aluminum frame in-house for the first time.

Check out my post from one of my visits Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant Tour…AWESOME!!

OOOHHH....I'd work there!!!

OOOHHH….I’d work there!!!

I did a post from a car show down on the border and covered a corvair with a Ralph Nader for President bumper sticker which was a hoot. (See it here Corvair – The Last Car .) But one Corvair I haven’t seen in years at a car show  or anywhere is the  Lakewood.

1962 Lakewood

1962 Lakewood

There’s a good reason for this.  These  Corvair station wagons were only made in 1961 and 1962.  Only 33,271 wagons were produced in those two years.  A subset of those were the Monza of 1962.  Only 2567 of those wagons were produced.

A there were a couple of engine the 80 horse power Turbo Air and a 98 horse powered Super Turbo Charge.

That makes me think I need to do post on just Corvairs.

Spotted: Jaguar F-Type in the Wild

I saw my first F-Type on the streets the other day.  It wasn’t just a sighting, it was a drive along.

The convertible as white and I think it looked great in motions.  We drove side by side for about 10 blocks and it seemed quick (not as quick as my C6 – had to prove that – without breaking any laws or freaking out the cars around us) and had a snappy take off.

However, with my windows down and my stereo off (that almost never happens) I got a ear full of how it sounded.  Sorry to say I was not impressed.

I expected to have been, with power specs like this:

3.0 liter V6 Supercharged 3.0 liter V6 Supercharged 5.0 liter V8 Supercharged
340 @ 6,500 380 @ 6,500 495 @ 6,500
3.33 x 3.50 in.
(84.5 x 89.0 mm)
3.33 x 3.50 in.
(84.5 x 89.0 mm)
3.64 x 3.66 in.

I don’t know which model I was driving along with, it didn’t like the sound.

We’ve all seen/heard the Hondas and Nissans with the “enhanced” sound effects mufflers.  The F-Type sounds like the Jaguar was trying too hard to create the “muscle” car sound and missed by several octaves (at least).   A baffling problem given such a good looking sports car.

Curb Weight – Ferraris – 6/30/2013

This is my latest segment.  It will be a frequent blathering of car stuff – current and maybe some old stuff.  I hope you enjoy it.

Everyone knows that Ferrais aren’t as plentiful as Honda Accords or Toyota Camerys.  Even though that’s true the folks at Ferrai think they are making too many.  Last year they produced 7,318 units.  They’d like to cap it at 7,000.  So how do they make money?  According to Motor Trend (Scott Evans) it’s branding.  They sell 95 Ferrari licensed items every minute.

I'm guessing that is true..even I have a Ferrari Mug!!!!
