Aaron Robinson: So Long, Convertibles – Column – Car and Driver.

Thought I’d share this article from Car and Driver.

My first car was a convertible – 1966 Impala. It was given to me in 1976 when I graduated high school.  I lived in upstate New York and being young I could squeeze out a good 5 months of top down.   But speeds were slower then and gas was cheap so cruising wasn’t half your paycheck and you could still hear the stereo.  But when it got down to the middle up winter in the Adirondacks, nothing stopped the code from getting in and you sure could tell how light the car was when you had to drive on snow and ice.

My next convertible was my 1984 Corvette, of course wasn’t really a rag top but a targa top, which is a perfect alternative to a folding cloth top and much better than a mere sun roof.  But I know live a weather environment 180o from where I had my first convertible.  Here in southern Arizona you can maybe squeeze out 5 months where it’s great to run with the roof off without melting like a carton of gelato in a microwave oven or freezing your assets off when it 29 – Yeah it gets that could here!  However, depending on how sensitive to hot and cold you are and whether you mind lifting the lifting the top out of the rear cargo area you in the summer time often start out the morning with the top in the back and pop it on when the temp climbs past your liking.  EXTRA BONUS – it keeps the cool air in 90% better than the cloth top.  I enjoy by C6 topless.

Oh, as a side note the C4 top was a pain to remove – the C6 much easier to remove and replace!!!

You might know this car. Yup my c6. Only Corvette to show up.

Corvette Chief Engineer Says 2015 Z06 Could Be the Last of the Breed

Slacking 101 – What’s coming up?

So I’ve been slacking since getting back from our Italy trip. Ok…that’s not exactly true.  Some slacking has taken place, however some time has been spent recovering from reconstructive surgery on my right shoulder – yes my shifting side!!!!!   They called it bicep tendon relocation, which is severing the upper connection of the tendon and relocating somewhere in the joint. See the actual surgical pic below….no…I’m kidding…no pic…seriously, ain’t nobody got time for that!!!

It’s been about three weeks and I’ve started physical therapy…or as I call it “pay as you go torture”.  Slowly coming back and I at least, with the proper adjustments do the driver’s seat, I can lay my arm on the console and shift the Vette – thank the Car Gods for short throw!!!!!

This also means with a bit of adjustment to the driver’s seat…Smile typing with both hands is now possible.

So coming up will be a gratuitous post on my new line of services that include auto restoration project management and certified auto appraisals.  I plan on continuing the Lost Classic Truck series and I have a few more engine pieces to do as well.

You’ll also see a piece I’m writing on a drag strip and some interesting figures on racing teams and as promised, some details on the cars and driving in Italy.

I’m also giving way some collectible cars from Motor Mint so get me your email and you’ll be entered to win.

So grab the RSS feed and drop me some comments on the articles.

Nurburgring Lap Times, Jim Mero and the 2014 Corvette Stingray

So far GM has been mum on the C7 Corvette Stingray’s Nurburgring time but we just know that setting a fast lap would be on the table. Remember that 7:19.63 Corvette ZR1 time that was set by Mero in 2011? While they were

New C7 – Encounter

It’s good to have friends or acquaintances at place where car stuff happens, even at ‘stealerships’.

I was on my way home from work when may phone rang, normally I don’t answer when I’m driving and almost never when the number isn’t in my contacts.  But I answered it (hands free people…hands free!!!) and the voice on the other end wasn’t immediately familiar.

“Tim, this is Scott, from —– Chevy.”  I  then remembered having a couple conversations with him about Vettes, one of them dealing with the chrome on the Grand Sport.

He continued by reminding me of our Corvette conversations and then said…”I have a the new Corvette in  and….”  I interrupted and in a high pitched tone said… “Can I see it!?!?!?!”  (sounded like a little kid, I’m sure.)  He said…”We getting it ready for the buyer to pick up….”  I interrupted again….”I’m two blocks away.  I can be there in five!!!” He responded “Yes, I can get you back there to see it.”

I give my C6 a little more air/fuel mixture and got there in 4 minutes.

The dealership was having one of those 24 hours sale and there was a live band, one of the local Corvette clubs had a row of 50’s – now Vette generations (minus the C7), a couple of 1920’s Chevy’s  and a T.V. news crew.

I parked in front and weaved my way though the cars and people and headed inside.  I was stopped by a salesman and asked for Scott.

(Reading this back to myself..you’d think I was picking up my  very own C7!!!)

Salesman led me inside and there was Scott in one of the salesman cubes.  He’s says “You want to see it?”  I said “Lets go.”  Trying to be a bit cooler than I was on the phone.

We chatted on our way to the rear of the facility and  I mentioned my numerous trips back to Kentucky and visiting the assembly plant.  I’ve seen the a C5 being built and a couple C6’s.  We got to the back of the building and headed outside to the prep-area.  No C7 in sight.

While Scott took a call I  wandered around the bays and then back outside.  Then as I turn to my right, I  heard the wonderful sound of American Muscle in low gear (given the C7 is 7 speeds I guessed it was in 3rd gear) and I saw a most magnificent machine moving toward me and then it hung a left  (all in slow motion ) and gave me a broadside view and parked in one of the prep bays.  There it was, my first in person encounter with the new C7 and the first C7 to be delivered in my area.

Once I got my legs moving (again in slow motion) I headed to the bay,  Scott had just joined me.  I had about 60 second of “alone time” before the crew was there and someone started shouting…”We have 5 minutes…lets move…we have only 5 minutes.”  It was like being in the pits at a NASCAR race or (I reflected later ) like a maternity ward when a baby is being delivered.

I managed to get my phone out and in the rushed atmosphere I managed get a good look at the interior and some outside shots, while dodging the “pit crew”.  It  was a thrill!!!

It truly is an impressive vehicle.
