The Rebuild of a Ford 3 Speed Transmission

Coming up will be a series of posts as I rebuild the original 3 speed transmission.  This is the original  3 speed transmission from my 1970 Mustang. I’ve replaced it with a rebuilt 1965 4 speed transmission from a Shelby Mustang. (See that in a post coming up.)

I’ll start the tear down after the Christmas holiday.

Everybody knows that saying “I’ve died and gone to heaven”, and this applies to most enthusiasts in this junkyard full of old decrepit Ford Mustangs. Especially, the project guy that has an old classic sitting in the garage. I’m sure it could go either way, though, as some might consider this a sore sight with so many wrecked and rusted ponies. This is the Colorado Mustang Salvage Yard.

Colorado Mustang Specialists, Inc. began in a two-car garage in 1972. Mustangs were as numerous as hippies on a Boulder park lawn, easy to buy, fix and sell. So, a would be University of Colorado student found a lucrative way to pay his rent and tuition. After graduation the diploma went in a drawer and the horsing around got serious. Wrecked, junked and abandoned Mustangs were cheap and plentiful, so the collection started that eventually led to the worlds largest Mustang salvage yard.

Most recent and exciting to us is the addition of modern fuel injection conversions, for 64-1/2 to 85 models. These conversions and related parts let the novice enthusiast bring his early Mustang into the new millennium with a computer driven, fuel-injected, V-8 power train, meeting todays standards without changing the Mustangs classic design. We predict these conversions will open a fun and exciting new era of Mustang enthusiasm.

So what I’ve I been doing lately car-wise?

Finishing up the front seats of Mustang and putting them back in the car.  Yes, I know I should have gotten all the new carpet and the heat and sound deadening but  I didn’t.  They are easy enough to remove so not really a big deal.  I did notice while the seats were out just how thin the carpeting actually was, there is nothing between it and the floor pans, I’ve got to get those done…soon…soon.

When New Technology Meets Old Cars

When you work with and/or drive classic cars there is a never ending battle between old school and technology. Do I leave the points and condenser in or do I go all electronic? Do I update the suspension with coil-overs or go with stock suspension? Upgrade the interior to cloth or go with the vinyl? Many of us face those battles all the time. But there’s one clash between old and new that we just can’t to anything about and that is when new non-car technology clashes with old cars.

Back in ancient times the man went out to gather or kill something to bring home for dinner. That hasn’t changed much, especially in my household. Every week I strike out into the jungle to visit the local gatherers’ spot and cart home something for dinner. The only killing going on is my checking account balance.

Today was the day for our weekly shopping, so I fired up the ’70 Stang and headed out, ready for the hunt. After I was done scouting for “sales” and had enough provisions to last seven moons, the clerk (oh, they don’t call them that anymore…’associate’ is the correct term) took my hard earned provisions(HEY!!!..its tough shopping at the mega grocery – carts speeding around like herds of prehistoric lizards, tar pits of jelly on the floor, ill tempered rival tribes in the gourmet isle…yeah…it’s tough!!), stuffed them in to about 20 plastic bags and dumped it all into a cart. On the way out of the store a couple of clerks….excuse me…associates…said have a ‘nice day’ and ‘thank you’, as I tried to push the squared wheeled cart to the parking lot and my car.

 

As I popped open the trunk on the Mustang, I remembered the floor of this cavernous opening is covered with the new vinyl (original material) I installed a few months back and nothing else (I don’t carry a spare for drag strip purposes and it wouldn’t work with the tire size anyway). I looked at the contents of the squared wheeled cart and realized that by the time I got home, my gatherings will be all over the place, even if I didn’t drive like I normally do. If I tied them shut, the bags are still going slide everywhere, including into the quarter panel wells, creating a dripping plastic bag full of wine that just moments ago were grapes.

My next option was putting the bags inside, on the vinyl bench seat in the rear and the on front bucket set. Still the vinyl was going to let everything slide side to side and drop down on the floor.

 

Then I remembered back to when I shopped with my mother as a kid and the vinyl seats in our old Chevy Biscayne. The saving grace there were the old school paper bags that stood up straight and were packed heavy to stay in place. Their square shape allowed for the use of effective load master techniques that kept them on the seat or upright in the trunk. Then I thought,”I should have gone with the cloth over the vinyl.”

Some people are visual creatures and some are more in tune with the mechanics of life. I am a visual creature. The shape and colors of things are what I see first. So the whole idea of designing and drawing cars just fascinates me. Since this is a Mustang enthusiast website, thinking of what the next Mustang will look like is a mini obsession of mine.

Back in September of 2009, I started following a blog on the design of the new Mustang for 2014. And what appeared on that blog just blew me away.

Now I realize that Area 51 exists for more than just concealing a crashed alien space ship. It is also a test area for military vapor ware that we may see 20 years or so after it is new, you know, after it becomes obsolete and is no longer top secret. Well, getting a glimpse into the design studios of a major car company is like getting a tour of Area 51. You may see things that amaze and confuse and things you may have thought only existed in someone’s twisted imagination.

So how would it feel to get a whole truck load of sketches of the 2010 Mustang, drawn by one of the designers, just months after the new design was introduced? Yeah, it was pretty special. Rob Jensen was one of the designers of the 2010 Mustang, specifically, the GT500. Now, maybe you have seen these sketches before. Maybe they amazed and confused you back then, as they were way too “artsey” for a production car. But some parts and pieces of them made it onto the 2010 cars and some of them were left on the drawing board, literally.

For the Mustang Enthusiast in the crowd that leans towards the visual, stunning design side of cars, please enjoy the collection of sketches in our gallery below. Some are from Rob Jensen, some are from others on the Ford Mustang design team. Still others are designs by professional artists and amateurs that put together some very impressive Future ‘Stangs.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are seeing it here, out in the open, then most likely it looks absolutely nothing like the next Mustang will look. Think of this as the Area 51 Museum of Mustang design. If you like something you see, give the artist some love as I will try to provide links to as many of the artists as I can. If there is another artist out there that we need to know about, definitely put them in the comments or drop us a line.

Project Pontiac 1949 Silver Streak Delivery Van

I have a co-worker who from time to time has mentioned his Pontiac project and we’ve ‘bench restored’ a few times.  But I’d never actually saw this car , nearly a picture.  But thanks to our first real rain here in Southern AZ since last year I think, and the fact that we don’t do our monsoon season any other way than “harsh”  my  co-worker’s (we’ll call him ‘Mike’…’cause that’s actually his name) neighbor had a tree that suffered enough wind damage it and to be taken down.  So Mike had to move the car, parked it behind his daily driver.  Got up this morning and decied..heck, I’ll drive it to work.

And that’s how I got the pic of the 1949 Pontiac Silver Streak Delivery Van, all original  and get this…..his family is the only owner the beauty every had.  His grand father purchased it new.  More to come on this one but here are some pics.

Closure Missing 1970 Mustang Grande

OK after all these years, after the car was gone.  I stopped by the house.  I was met by Al, short for Albert, not Alan, as Al informed me.

I told him that I had always wanted to check on the Grande and he informed I was a bit late.  He said he didn’t mind answers a few questions.

So I asked Al how got the car and he said he bought it back in 1972 from some guy.  “It was a nice car with an automatic.”  Of course my next question was what was under the hood and he said ‘nothing’.  “Took it out about 10 years ago and parked on the side of the house.”  He told me he never got the engine fixed, ” ’cause  it ‘cost too much.”  He ended up letting the guy that did some work on it keep.  “Ya know, it might have been a 302.”  He said he didn’t really know want to do with the body and just ended up hanging on to it.

So I asked him where the car end up, hoping it was sent out to be restored.  He said there was this guy from Texas that would stop by every now and then and ask if it was for sale.  He drives large pick up and always has an empty trailer attached.  This same guy that has stopped by a co-worker of mine, who has her son’s 70 Monte Carlo and her daughter’s 1969 Camaro sitting under her car port – waiting for some TLC and try’s to convince her that she should sell them to him.  She chases him off each time, but he’ll swing by a few months later.

A couple of weeks ago, Texas dude, stops by Al’s home and Al decided to get the Grande out of the yard and sold the man from Texas.

We talked a bit longer about my 1970 Mustang coupe and I showed him a couple of pics on my phone and then thanked him for his time.

There ya go..closure!

Mustang Upholstery Part II

The next step is to remove the seat from the car.

For the Mustang the studs pass through the track and the nuts are under the car so a little space is need.  Since most average guy’s don’t have a lift in their home garage, so I pull out the trusty 2 ton floor jack and a jack stand.

As most Mustang owners know, they were built with subframes.  When jacking up the car with a floor jack place it on the frame, or use the standard scissor jack that attached to the seam at the rocker panel.  Either way once it’s in the air, DO NOT FORGET to put the jack stand under the car. Yes it actually takes longer to do the set up then to remove the bolts…but take the time to be save.

These plugs pry out very easily.  I was able to get them out with just my fingers.  Once they are removed you’ll have access to the nut.  The distance between the opening and the nut requires an extension and the length of the stud requires a deep socket.  These were 1/2″.  The Mustang was raised in Arizona (get it?  First reader to drop a comment explaining “get it” wins a DVD.)  and all the plugs are in place.  This kept all the road grime and what not off the studs and nuts, they separated easily.

When you are done you should have this many parts.

When I purchased the Mustang I was told that the upholstery was replaced at some point. (Keep that in mind for later as well.)

As you can see in the video I wasn’t able to get the seat out of the car. I initially I figured it was because I couldn’t pull out level enough for the studs to clear the holes due to the fact that I was holding the camera. However, after putting it down I still shouldn’t get the seat out. So I climbed back under the car and found that there was a second nut on the right rear stud. I’m guess it was doubled up, when the last installer wasn’t sure whether they already but one on? And of course you can see by the previous picture that those two nuts not the same as the others.

Mustang Upholstery Part I

I know, I have a lot of work scheduled for the Mustang. This includes interior work and yes maybe doing it all at once would be a good idea. But I drive it a couple of times a week and the seat is getting worse. So I decided it needed to be fixed.

 

The kit is from TMI and I think I purchased it from a Mustang parts dealer, but I don’t recall which one. Here’s a couple of videos on it.

 

 

What I noticed is the black piping. I know that the car was re-upholstered before I purchased it, so I’m guessing that this was not original, at least they don’t make them in the reproduction world.

 

Coming up is the removal of the seat.

Parking Lot Spotlight 6/13/2011

Here is another cool  car sighting.

This one was in the parking lot of the a local auto parts store Checker’s or O’Rielly’s….or….all those mergers are making hard to have common name that everyone can related too (remember when there was just NAPA….can’t find them very often).

1969 Chevelle 454 Restored shell

This 1969  Chevelle  was merely as shell…oh but is extremely well done restoration.  The paint was excellent (makes ya wonder why it was being dragged round uncovered), the inside of the shell had been as expertly sprayed as the exterior..it was almost a shame to put in the interior in there.

Reproduction gauges and not much in the way of interior yet.

The badge on the car shows that this car housed or will house 454.  But however, the 454 didn’t show up on the scene until until 1970 so this must be a retro fit.

You can see the big power plant is missing.

It looks absolutely ready to for dropping that monster engine back in and hitting the strip.  Hey I don’t even mind the wheels!!!

Didn’t find the owner (or driver) , part store was crowded.

Of course this isn’t a 1970, I’ll update the data a bit later.

Some 1970 Chevelle facts:

– The 454 was produced between 1970 thru 1976.

–  It produced 450 hp configured with 4bbl carb

–  It was designated the LS6 with 475 ftlbs of torque and 9.0:1 compression ratio

The majority of the Chevelle’s  (approx. 13,000) had V8 in 1970 and approx. 10,000 had 6 cylinders.
