Next-Gen LT1 6.2-Liter V-8 for 2014 Corvette Revealed with 450 HP, New Tech – WOT on Motor Trend

With the new C7 just days away with from it’s reveal – will it look the a Camaro or not much of a change from the C6?

We  don’t exactly know, but what we do know it will have the GM small block a mainstay for 57 years.  This version will be almost all new and dubbed the “LT1”,  (after the 70’s engine) and will be naturally aspirated with direct fuel injection (the first with push rods).  The idea is that the base Corvette will have 450 hp and 450 lb-ft, compression will be 11.5:1 and get 26 miles per gallon (yeah….RIGHT!!).

Read some more at the link below and in the Feb 2013 Edition of Motor Trend read “Up Close and Personal With the LT1” (page 15).

Well, once again I find myself contradicting. I guess I fall for a pretty face. YES, I like the C7. I must credit GM with keeping the heritage, or rather ‘protecting’ the heritage of the Corvette with the new C7. They did it right.

I admit when the C5 features leaked out, I thought I’d hate it because it ‘looked too much like a RX8’. Then when I say the real thing (at the San Fransisco auto show) I fell in love.

When I saw renderings of the C7 rear, again I thought I’d hate it because it looks like a Camaro. Yep, I saw the real thing tonight ON LINE live from the Detroit Auto Show, and I just love the car.

Kudos to GM! Thanks for another great Corvette!

Just an FYI; guys over at Challengertalk.com are complaining about timing chain failures in 5.7 HEMI with the multiple displacement system (“MDS”). It seems that as the cylinders cut in and out of MDS mode, the timing chain takes some stress. Chrysler is having to replace many Hemi engines with 30 to 50K miles now. Of course, if you didn’t get the 100K warranty, you will need to spend $5,000 on a reman long block and labor.

Knowing what I know today, I see the “ghost of the V8-6-4” haunting these multiple displacement systems. It is one of those ideas that look good on paper, but in reality cannot be implemented without side effects.

I’m not impressed that the new LT1 has a “V4” mode. I’ll take ye ol’350 cast iron block of the C4 Corvette and 1990s Impala SS.

Of course, if I bought ANY new GM car, I would have an extended warranty, expecially to cover the overdesigned Corvette.

Let me hear from you!!! Drop a note!!
