Introducing #ProjectBeepBeep – Code H 1968 Road Runner

I’d like you to take a look at one of my constant readers classic muscle car.

First let me say that Bill has been an a long quest to find a car to replace this car:

Back in the day.

It was a long search with lots of phone calls with many car owners.  Some of the stories of his search would make a great post, but for now let’s get to his new find, which if you can’t tell in video below, he’s pretty happy about this rare color code car.

His new pride and joy is a H code, 1968 Road Runner and it breaks down like this:

R – Plymouth Belvedere, Satellite (“B” body)
M – Medium price group
23 – 2 door hardtop
H – 383 1-4BBL 8 Cylinder “B” engine (High Performance)
G – St. Louis, Missouri – birth place

It is for the most part as it came from the factory.  But I’m going to let Bill cover all the details with you.  Here is his first video.

Here a few pics of Bill’s Road Runner he sent when he was looking it over.

<

Bill will be providing updates on the restoration and other task as he works on this beautiful Mopar (makes me miss my Dodge Dart).

So keep checking for more on #ProjectBeepBeep.

Engine Line Up – 1947 Chrysler

There’s not a huge fan club for the 1947 Chrylsers.  They were huge cars weighing well over 3,000 lbs, 18ft long and room for the whole family.  With names like Town & Country, New Yorker, Windsor, Saratoga – these car did demand respect.

1947 Town and Country - that sub-model name was used a lot by Chrysler

1947 Town and Country – that sub-model name was used a lot by Chrysler

You’d think they’d have huge engines to push these around town but the engine line up for 1947 consisted of only 2, one 6 cylinder and one 8 cylinder.

The 6 cylinder was called the Royal/Windsor engine.  It was an L head, cast iron hunk of metal.  With a bore and stroke of 3.438 ” x 4.50 “, five main bearings, solid lifter it displaced 250.6 cubic inches.  With the compression ratio at 6.6:1 (rather low) and topped with various carbs (B-B EV1 or Ev2 or E7L4 – for the fluid drive and B-BEx-1, EX3 or Ex2 for the manual shift) it managed to put out 114 HP’s.

Flat Head L6 Chrysler engine - powered some of these giants.

The 8 cylinder was labeled Saratoga/New Yorker.  It was a flat headed iron blocked L8.  The bore was smaller than the 6 cylinder @ 3.25″ and the stroke was slightly higher @ 4.875 (nearly 1/2 an inch higher), creating compression ratio of 6.7:1 and displacing 323.5 cid.  It had solid lifters and five main bearings and took in air though a B-B E7A1 carb.  This all produced horse power of about 135 @ 3400 RPMSs

Engine Line Up – 1946 Packard

I love writing Engine Line Up pieces. I learn a lot doing the research. Back in 1946 there wasn’t a lot of imagination when it came to naming cars. Packard either named their cars after the engines that powered them or their engines after their car models plus the cylinder count. …

Engine Line Up – 1949 Chevrolet

1949 was the first year after World War II where Chevrolet did a complete maker-over of its offerings, meager in terms of variations as compared to what they would become in the next decade. With only the Special Series 1500 GJ, Deluxe Series GK, each with a Fleetline and Styleline …

Engine Line Up – 1956 Hudson Part I

Think there was much of a choice of engines back in 1956?  Well there were a few for the 1956 Hudson. As was custom back in the 40’s and 50’s, the engines were often named similar to the model of the car they powered.  For the 1956 Hudson, the company had …

Engine Line UP – 1964-1966 Griffith

Ok…how many of you stopped to Google Griffith? Not a commonly mentioned classic car, right? Well the Griffith was developed by a Ford dealer, Jeff Griffith.  It was a tubular frame with a British TVR body bolted on.  He produce the cars in that configuration, until the source of the TVR bodies …

Challenger Hellcat with ‘600-plus horsepower’ – Autoblog

I’ve said it a few times and I’ll say it again and mostly likely not for the last time.  MOPAR got it RIGHT with the Challenger!!!!!  Fiat ownership or not….it will continue to be an iconic car.

Now take that car that you did so right and boost it’s horse power….maybe up to 600 or more…and…well let’s not mince words…it’s a MONSTER!!!  Chase the link below and check out the video, you’ll see what I mean!!!! Can you say…first every factory super-charger!!!

001-2015-dodge-challenger-srt-hellcat_628opt
2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat with ‘600-plus horsepower’ officially unveiled – Autoblog.

Dodge has officially unveiled the most powerful vehicle to ever wear the Challenger name – the SRT Hellcat– complete with over 600 horsepower courtesy of a supercharged, 6.2-liter Hemi V8. It will be offered alongside the 485-hp Challenger SRT

The new, force-induced V8 isn’t just the most powerful ever fitted to the Challenger, it’s the most powerful eight-cylinder Chrysler Group has ever built. Power figures aren’t finalized, so expect to see “over 600 hp” bandied about quite a lot. That fury will be channeled through either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. Yes, over 600 ponies through an eight-speed auto. So far, the only vehicle we know of that delivers more output through that many gears is the as-yet untested Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Sadly, we don’t have performance metrics just yet, although if this thing can’t crack four seconds to 60 miles per hour, we’ll be pretty surprised.

Just a field full of vintage Mopar metal!!!!   You’ve gotta love the prices that these car brought.

I often read where automotive writers type, “Where are all the classic/muscle cars?”   They really need to get out more. There are many places just like this one across the U.S.   Take a drive a cross the Painted Desert.  I’m sure I saw at least 10 muscle Mustangs in the backyards, garages and car ports!!!
